YORK MINSTER FIRE OAK & BELL METAL LETTER SEAL MAY 1840

 

Period: 19th century.

Materials: Oak & bell metal from the York Minster fire of 1840.

Dimensions: 80mm wide x 25mm deep.

Makers marks: Unsigned.

Condition: There is a minor split / crack to the bottom section, and the bell metal mount is slightly pushed down on one side, otherwise very good. Wear commensurate with age and use.

Notes: A very interesting snuff box, made from oak and bell metal salvaged from the Minster during restorarion. The roundel reads "Oak & Bell metal of York Minster, burnt May 20: 1840".
